STORYLINE:

UNICEF Executive Director Ann M. Veneman concluded a landmark tour of Syria, where she met with President Bashar al-Assad, by commending UNICEF’s Syrian partners for their accomplishments in the field of child and youth issues.

At a press conference Ann Veneman said that Syria was a very impressive country which was making very good progress on a number of issues. She said that those challenges included, “the quality of education - ensuring that children are getting a quality and relevant education”. Besides the challenges posed by drought in certain parts of the country Veneman also said that, “violence against children is another challenge. Violence in the families, violence in the schools and something I know that the Government is trying very hard to address with various programs.” 
 
Touring a number of crucial UNICEF partnered projects, Ms. Veneman gained an insight into how these challenges were being met.

Stressing the importance of preventative integrated healthcare for Syrian and refugee families and their children, Ms Veneman visited a thriving Public Health Centre in the Hussainya refugee camp.

The centre boasts a team of female volunteers working alongside a local NGO and healthcare professionals. Rapidly becoming the model to be replicated across the country with a planned centre in the North Eastern Governorates – where drought and poverty is at its most extreme in Syria.

The centre also hosts regular and boisterous mother’s meetings which serve as a conduit for important health and childcare education.

“We’ve just talked to the women and the mothers, and what it’s done is helped create networks of people,” said Ms. Veneman. “And I think that is really helping them to cope much better with the transitions they have made in their lives.”

Impressed by Syria’s evident economic growth the UNICEF Executive Director was keen to stress that the young must not be left behind by the development process.

She also met representatives of Non-governmental Organizations who support youth entrepreneurs.  In this spirit, Ms. Veneman saw two small entrepreneurial projects supported by microfinance. By injecting small loan sums international NGOs and their local partners are helping fuel individual business dreams - in this case a thriving beauty salon and a mini-food market. Located in an underserved are area that creeps chaotically but inexorably to the North of the capital and equipped with few facilities - this is a place where victories are won

Re-invigorated by the inspiring children, women, and adolescents met over the last few days, UNICEF will continue to champion the educational, healthcare and security needs of all young people within Syria.
