STORYLINE:
 
A USA-sponsored conference on the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) has re-strengthened the spirit of peace and commitment of Sudan’s two partners to bring about lasting peace, stability, prosperity and security to the people of Sudan.

Participants from the two main political parties – the National Congress Party (NCP) and Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM), over 170 people representing 30 countries and various international organizations met on the 23rd of June in Washington.

The United Nations Special Representative for the Secretary General Ashraf Qazi held a press conference today in Khartoum, acknowledging the Washington Conference’s achievement in refocusing international attention on the CPA.

He urged the leadership of both the parties to resolve some of the outstanding issues including border demarcation, redeployment of troops, use of census results and Abyei.

Qazi further welcomed the American initiative and the commitment of Sudan’s two main political parties together with the international community to continue to cooperate to assist both parties in implementing the CPA.

The participants present at the conference noted that the CPA had reached a crucial turning point and that those involved needed to double their efforts if the Agreement’s end goal was to be achieved.
