STORYLINE:

General-Assembly President Miguel d'Escoto Brockmann called for the “peaceful restoration” of ousted Honduran President Manuel Zelaya today (29 June) at a special session convened to discuss Sunday’s coup d’etat.

D'Escoto, who invited the ousted President to New York to speak to the General assembly, said that the UN organ “might consider ways to ensure a peaceful restoration of the legitimate government of President Zelaya in the hours and days ahead.”

He said that “the first coup in the region since the end of the cold war” is the work of “reactionary forces who have never given a hoot” about Latin America’s poor and “are now alarmed by the remarkably powerful movement that have brought progressive governments to power.”

Honduran Ambassador Jorge Reina expressed loyalty to the ousted President and said that his country “has lost its democratic government” through a coup d’etat that “sent him to another country in the middle of the night.”

According to media reports, President José Manuel Zelaya Rosales was overthrown at gunpoint during his sleep, hours before a referendum was slated to be held on changing the Honduran constitution.

Ambassador Claude Heller of Mexico, speaking on behalf of the Group of Rio, said that “the rupture of constitutional order is inadmissible and unacceptable and constitutes a practice that Latin American and Caribbean society has categorically rejected.”

Earlier at an unrelated press conference, Chilean Ambassador Heraldo Muñoz said that his country “has condemned very firmly” what he referred as “a vulgar coup d’etat” that “cannot be disguised as anything else”. He expressed support for Zelaya and called for the issue to be “resolved shortly with the reinstatement of the President.”

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has expressed his deep concern over the reported coup in Honduras, voicing his strong support for the nation’s democratic institutions and speaking out against the arrest of its constitutional President.

The statement noted that the Secretary-General welcomes the prompt diplomatic efforts undertaken by the Organization of American States (OAS), whose Permanent Council has held a special meeting on the matter.
