“The whole world is now very seriously engaged in preventing proliferation of nuclear weapons, and nuclear materials and this is a very important objective of international community at this time. This hampers this ongoing efforts of international community and United States and Russian Federation have started their nuclear disarmament to find the successor treaty to start treaty, therefore all this actions taken by DPRK runs counter not only to the violation of Security Council resolution, but also ongoing international community efforts.”

STORYLINE:

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon cautioned against undue alarm while stressing the need for preparedness, as the United Nations health agency announced that the world was experiencing an influenza pandemic caused by the new H1N1 virus.

At his monthly news conference today, Ban Ki-moon told journalists that although infectious, the new virus had so far “not been as severe as had been feared and death rates have been low.”

Commenting on the Middle East, Ban said that he looked forward to the next meeting of the Quartet, scheduled to take place at the end of the month in Italy.

He said that President Obama's address in Cairo last week had “lent new momentum to the peace process”. He added that the rights of Palestinians and Israelis, to self-determination, statehood and security were the basis of any policy going forward.

On Sri Lanka, he said he was encouraged that the government was committed to return eighty percent of those displaced in the fighting to their homes by the end of this year but stressed the need for a strong and transparent process of accountability.

On Myanmar, Ban said that promoting democratization, including the release of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi had been his top priority and he has been consistently engaged in dialogue with his special Envoy Ibrahim Gambari.

He said that when the time was appropriate for him to visit the country he would let journalists know.

Concerning the Democratic People's Republic of Korea nuclear ambitions, Ban said that while the whole world was now “very seriously” engaged in preventing proliferation of nuclear weapons, the actions taken by DPRK not only violated Security Council resolutions, but also the ongoing international community efforts to get rid of nuclear weapons.
