“What might or might not come out of next week's meeting would be a recommendation that would be given to the Director-General. The Director-General would consider this and either issue a note, usually she takes great consideration of advice and recommendations from these groups, to recommend to manufacturers to produce large-scale stocks of H1N1. The decision is not that of WHO, the decision would be for the manufacturers to take. It is their prerogative to decide what they produce.”

STORYLINE:

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and World Health Organizaton (WHO) Director-General Dr. Margaret Chan will meet heads of major pharmaceutical companies in Geneva on 19 May to discuss equitable access to H1N1 vaccine, once production gets underway. 
 
Dr Marie-Paule Kieny, Director of WHO's vaccine research initiative told journalists Wednesday evening this was one of two key meetings on vaccines, scheduled for the coming weeks.
 
The other, on May 14th would bring together health experts who would advise on when large scale production of an anti-H1N1 'flu vaccine should begin and whether it should replace production of existing seasonal vaccines.
 
Dr Kieny explained that WHO would issue a recommendation on the basis of the expert group's decision, but it would be up to manufacturers to decide what they produce.
 
She added that those companies with more than one plant could produce a different vaccine in each of its factories.
  
Dr Kieny said the "seed strain" basis for the vaccine should be sent to manufacturers by the end of the month. 
 
WHO was working with the four large multinational companies, as well as with manufacturers in China, Hungary and Serbia, whose individual capacity was limited but who together could produce  hundreds of millions of vaccines.
 
On required dosage, Dr Kieny said only clinical trials will show if one or two doses of a vaccine would be needed to protect against the new influenza virus.
