A new United Nations-backed study said Afghanistan registered record levels of opium poppy cultivation this year, with the illicit crop being cultivated in an estimated 224,000 hectares of land. The "Afghanistan Opium Survey 2014" indicated a seven percent increase in the total land area used by poppy growers, as compared to last year.
