STORYLINE
Iran's foreign minister Javad Zarif today (26 September) met with US Secretary of State John Kerry and members of the E3 +3 group to discuss Iran’s nuclear programme, while Iran's President Hassan Rouhani held a private meeting with Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.

The Secretary-General briefed the President on Syria and developments regarding the international conference, the goal of which is a comprehensive political agreement, as well as the chemical weapons issue and also humanitarian efforts in the region.

Ban urged substantive dialogue on the nuclear question and raised various human rights issues, as well as climate change.

Earlier today, Rouhani, in his address to the General Assembly’s general debate urged Israel to join the Non-proliferation Treaty (NPT).

The new Iranian President said that "almost four decades of international efforts to establish a nuclear free zone in the Middle East have regrettably failed” and “urgent practical steps towards the establishment of such a zone are necessary.”

He stressed that Israel, “the only non-party to the non-proliferation treaty in this region, should join without further delay.”

Speaking on behalf of the Non-alligned Movement (NAM), Rouhani presented a roadmap for the total elimination of nuclear weapons.
