STORYLINE
A medical camp was set up at Kanyaruchina health center, near Goma in North Kivu province, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), for a one day event to treat 500 people, including children.

The treatment activity was organized by Indian medical personnel from UN level 3 hospital in Goma. Seven specialized doctors, nurses and medical support staff treated the local population from a range of ailments.

They performed minor surgical cases on patients and carried out blood tests to identify diseases. The more complicated cases were referred to specialized hospitals elsewhere.

Patients also received medicine, and were sensitized on HIV/AIDS, family planning, sanitation, and personal hygiene.

The local leaders expressed gratitude and appealed to UN peacekeepers to establish the free medical treatment camp on a regular basis so that more people can get help.

The Indian North Kivu brigade commander said that they had “limited capacity” to help the suffering population.

He urged for support from other UN agencies, NGOs and volunteers to extend the medical services to other areas in the eastern DRC, where thousands are suffering.

Facilities providing health services are very limited in the DRC and the death rate remains high.
