STORYLINE
United States (US) Secretary of State Hillary Clinton told delegates at Rio +20 that this was a time to be "pragmatic but also optimistic."

Addressing delegates on the final day (22 June) of the conference on sustainable development in Brazil, she said the future was not gauranteed because all of our natural resources were under increasing pressure.

Clinton said the only viable development in the 21st century was sustainable development and that lasting progress would only be achieved by “protecting our common environment."

She noted that she was "very pleased" that this year's outcome document endorsed sexual and reproductive health and universal access to family planning.

But stressed the importance of women’s empowerment make their own decision about "whether and when" to have children and emphasized that US would continue to work to ensure that those rights were respected in international agreements.

More than 40,000 people – including heads of State and government, parliamentarians, mayors, UN officials, business and civil society leaders – are attending Rio+20, which ends on Friday. It seeks to shape new policies to promote global prosperity, reduce poverty and advance social equity and environmental protection.
