STORYLINE
The United Nations Security Council “expressed deep concern about a sharp escalation of violence in Yemen” and called all sides “to deescalate and to re-commit and re-engage without preconditions in the UN-led political process to achieve a durable ceasefire.”

Reading a statement after a closed-door Security Council meeting on Yemen, the president of the Council, the Japan’s ambassador Koro Besho told reporters “the members of the Security Council were unified in their deep concern about the dire and deteriorating humanitarian situation in Yemen with eight million people facing extreme food shortages and suspected cholera cases at over 970 000.”

Besho added in “Yemen stands on the brink of catastrophic famine.”

In the meeting, the fifteen-member-strong world body “strongly condemned missile attacks on Saudi Arabia” and reiterated “the importance of arms embargo provisions as per United Nations Security Council Resolution 2216.”

In April 2015, the Security Council adopted the resolution 2216 thus imposing sanctions on individuals it said were undermining the stability of Yemen.
