“I solemnly declare that I should truthfully perform my duties and exercised the functions entrusted to me as president of the General Assembly of the United Nations in all loyalty, discretion and conscience. And that I shell discharged these functions and regulate my conduct with the interest of the United Nations only; in view and in accordance with the Charter of the United Nations and the code of ethics for the president of the General Assembly without seeking and accepting any instructions in regards to the performance of my duties from any government or other source external to the organization.”

“I finish the 71st session the way I started it, in full conviction that the only way we can safeguard the future of our grandchildren on planet Earth is by faithful implementation of the Paris Climate Agreement and the 2030 Agenda for the Sustainable Development. Implementation is well within our grasp: we have the masterplan, we have universality and inclusivity of purpose, we certainly have the resources and we have definitely got the ingenuity to get there.”

STORYLINE
At the closing of the 71st session of the UN General Assembly (GA) today, Miroslav Lajcak, Slovak diplomat, was sworn in as the incoming president of the 72nd session of the main policymaking organ of the organization.

Lajcak was the Foreign Minister of Slovakia since 2012, until elected to preside the UN General Assembly earlier this year.

While welcoming the new president, the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres also paid tribute to the outgoing GA president Peter Thomson.

He said “over the past year, the Assembly continued to serve as a forum for pressing global issues, from human trafficking to antimicrobial resistance.”

For his part, the outgoing president Peter Thomson of Fiji said “I finish the 71st session the way I started it, in full conviction that the only way we can safeguard the future of our grandchildren on planet Earth is by faithful implementation of the Paris Climate Agreement and the 2030 Agenda for the Sustainable Development.”

Thomson also said “implementation is well within our grasp: we have the masterplan, we have universality and inclusivity of purpose, we certainly have the resources and we have definitely got the ingenuity to get there.”

In accordance with tradition, the Assembly President’s election follows the system of geographical rotation whereby regional groups — the Eastern European States in the present case — putting a consensus candidate forward every year.

72nd session of the UN General Assembly will start Tuesday, 12 September 2017.
