STORYLINE
UN Secretary-General António Guterres met today (17 Jul) with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif two years after the historic deal reached on the country's nuclear programme.

In a statement issued on Friday evening, the Secretary-General said the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) was a major achievement in the area of nuclear non-proliferation. He expressed confidence that the JCPOA is the best way to ensure the exclusively peaceful nature of Iran’s nuclear programme and realise the great aspiration of the Iranian people.

Guterres said he is encouraged by the continued implementation of the Plan and commended Iran for implementing its nuclear-related commitments, as verified by the International Atomic Energy Agency.
