STORYLINE
Until this past weekend, thousands of Iraqis have been trapped inside West Mosul. Many residents made the tough decision to flee the city, risking injury or death.

After militias killed her husband, mother-of-six Dalal from Zanjili neighbourhood left everything behind. But her flight was a tragic one. Her 16-year-old daughter, Milad, lost her leg to a sniper attack as they ran for their lives.

Despite finding safety in east Mosul, Milad is struggling to come to terms with her new disability.

Milad and her mother survived the violence in west Mosul.

Only for it to catch up to them miles from safety.

Milad had to have her leg amputated

The 16-year-old also lost her father in the fighting

But for her mother Dalal, surviving war means cherishing what she still has

Both are looking for the path to a better future

For them, that path leads back to home

Milad refuses to spend the rest of her life in a wheelchair
