United Nations Secretary-General told reporters today in Kabul that “Afghanistan is not only suffering the impact of a national insurgency, but it is suffering the presence of a large number of terrorist groups of all kind of nationalities from around the world.”

Secretary-General also said he hopes that “the UN General Assembly “will approve next week the reform of our counter-terrorism structure and I hope that with this reform, the UN will be much more effective in supporting Member States in the fight against terrorism.”


Expressing solidarity with Afghan people, in the wake of recent violence in the country, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres underscored the Organization's full commitment to work with the Government and people of the country to build a sustainable and prosperous future for them.

Guterres underlined importance of cooperation between Afghanistan and its neighbour Pakistan in fighting the terrorism.

He said “my objective is to do everything that is possible to facilitate and promote the cooperation of the two countries in addressing together the threat of terrorism.”

Secretary-General also said “my message to any country that supports terrorism anywhere in the world is that this is the wrong thing to do and if any country supports terrorism one day in relation to other countries, sooner or later the price paid will be high in relations to terrorism within the country itself.”

While in Kabul, the UN chief met with displaced men and women from the Kapisa province, now living in a settlement on the outskirts of Kabul.
