STORYLINE
A senior UN Human Rights official visiting South Sudan has expressed concern about the human rights violations of the thousands of internally displaced people in the country.

Andrew Gilmour Assistant Secretary-General for Human Rights on Thursday (16 Feb) particularly pointed out rampant rape and abductions, in the world’s youngest nation during a visit to the South Sudan’s second largest city Malakal.

Gilmour said “there are many stories how men go out and they will be abducted and killed. Women feel they have to go out in order to try and buy some goods and try sell them back in the camp or try to raise some small amounts of money somehow, but the risk being raped by security forces. So there is terrible choice, living here or not having even the most basic supplies and the ability of a livelihood.”

At the end of a four-day visit to South Sudan, the UN Assistant Secretary-General for Human Rights called for accountability on both sides of the conflict for the violations.
