STORYLINE
United Nations (UN) Secretary-General António Guterres met today (6 Jan) with Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Kotzias at headquarters in New York ahead of Cypriot peace talks set to take place in Geneva next week.

Guterres also met yesterday with Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu. The meetings come as part of an effort to ramp up support for UN-sponsored negotiations between Greek and Turkish Cypriot leaders to unify the divided island nation.

A United Nations monitored ceasefire line has prevailed in Cyprus since 1974. In July of that year, a coup d'état by Greek Cypriots favouring union with Greece led to military intervention by Turkey. Turkish Cypriot control was then established on the northern part of the island followed by a de facto ceasefire the following month.
