STORYLINE
The Security Council today (4 Jan) issued a statement welcoming the signing of a "comprehensive and inclusive political agreement" in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).

The statement, read by Council President, Ambassador Olof Skoog of Sweden, commends the efforts by the Conference Episcopale Nationale du Congo (CENCO) mediators to facilitate the agreement.

Council members said they were encouraged by the “spirit of flexibility and compromise” demonstrated by the party in reaching this agreement and expressed hope “for a swift implementation of the agreement” leading to “a peaceful transfer of power.”

The long-awaited development builds on an initial agreement signed on 18 October between part of the opposition and the Majorité présidentielle, and represents a significant step towards a peacefully managed transition.
