STORYLINE
Speaking at the opening of the UN Sustainable Development Goals Summit today, the UN Secretary-General said “the true test of commitment to Agenda 2030 will be implementation.”

The world leaders gathered in New York to adopt the Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development – a set of 17 “global goals” to be implemented by 2030.

Speaking at the opening of the Summit, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Ban Ki-moon, said “The true test of commitment to Agenda 2030 will be implementation. We need action from everyone, everywhere. Seventeen Sustainable Development Goals are our guide. They are a to-do list for people and planet, and a blueprint for success.”

Ban called upon world leaders to commit to the implementation of the goals and for “a renewed global partnership.”

He said that “the 2030 Agenda compels us to look beyond national boundaries and short-term interests and act in solidarity for the long-term. We can no longer afford to think and work in silos. Institutions will have to become fit for a grand new purpose.”

The Secretary-General also called upon “all governments to adopt in Paris in December, an agreement on climate which will be solid and universal.”

Saying that the Agenda 2030 “embodies the aspirations of people everywhere for lives of peace” Ban invited world leaders to “pledge to light the path to this transformative vision.”

The Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development is a plan of action that, among the rest, seeks to end poverty and hunger, promote sustainable development and fight the climate change.
