(04 August 2008) - The UN Special Rapporteur on the adverse affects on human rights of toxic waste dumping is in Cote d'Ivoire this week amid demonstrations by local residents who say the chemicals dumped by the Probo Koala two years ago were never properly cleaned up. In 2006, the Dutch-chartered ship dumped 500 tonnes of hazardous waste around the city of Abidjan, leading to a pollution crisis that left several people dead and tens of thousands in need of medical treatment. (04 August 2008) - Children took the spotlight in the days leading up to the XVII International AIDS Conference in Mexico City, which began on 3 August and will continue through 8 August. Among the big events focusing on HIV/AIDS and children were a pre-conference youth forum, attended by young people from around the world; and a children and AIDS symposium, which brought together a wide range of experts and policy makers.
