UN / COOL UNITED NATIONS (1.02) (01 August 2008) - UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon arrived to work today in a short-sleeved shirt, no tie, and spoke to reporters to launch his "Cool UN" campaign. Thermostats in the historic Secretariat building will be turned up by five degrees for a month-long trial in August, as part of an initiative to save energy and reduce carbon dioxide emissions produced by air-conditioning. PAHO / HIV STIGMA (4.18) (01 August 2008) - Several Latin American countries have launched new programmes to improve health care for sexual minorities. These programmes focus on reducing stigma and discrimination against sexual minorities and are part of larger efforts to boost HIV prevention and treatment. PAHO

UNICEF / BREASTFEEDING WEEK (1.53) (01 August 2008) - World Breastfeeding Week kicks off today with an exhortation to governments, health workers and women everywhere to give increased support to new mothers who need the space, time and encouragement to breastfeed their babies. UNICEF

MEXICO / HIV AIDS CONFERENCE ADVANCER (3.39) (01 August 2008) - The 24,000 delegates to the International AIDS Conference in Mexico, which begins on Sunday, 3 August, are looking for ways to effectively use the US$10 billion a year in global AIDS commitments to combat the epidemic. While there have been successes in countries like Botswana, where mother to baby transmission of HIV has greatly decreased, many problems lie ahead. Delegates will stress the need for further local and global commitment to fighting HIV AIDS. WORLD BANK
