(01 August 2008) - UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon arrived to work today in a short-sleeved shirt, no tie, and spoke to reporters to launch his "Cool UN" campaign. Thermostats in the historic Secretariat building will be turned up by five degrees for a month-long trial in August, as part of an initiative to save energy and reduce carbon dioxide emissions produced by air-conditioning. MEXICO / HIV AIDS CONFERENCE ADVANCER (3.39)
(01 August 2008) - The 24,000 delegates to the International AIDS Conference in Mexico, which begins on Sunday, 3 August, are looking for ways to effectively use the US$10 billion a year in global AIDS commitments to combat the epidemic. While there have been successes in countries like Botswana, where mother to baby transmission of HIV has greatly decreased, many problems lie ahead.
