MADAGASCAR / VENEMAN (2.02)
(28 July 2008) - Ann M. Veneman, on the first visit ever by a UNICEF Executive Director to Madagascar , spent Sunday in Analanjirofo, the region hardest hit by Cyclone Ivan. Madagascar , the world's fourth largest island, is prone to frequent cyclones and tropical storms. Cyclone Ivan was one of the biggest to hit the island, in February 2008, with winds of over 125 mph. (28 July 2008) - John Holmes the UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, told journalists at the UN today that although he is not sure if all the people affected by cyclone Nargis received the assistance they needed, the operation in Myanmar had been a success overall. (28 July 2008) - Health officials in central Asia's Kyrgyz Republic worry that the food crisis there is taking the heaviest toll on the country's mothers and young children.
