The GA observed a moment of silence to mark the death of former South African President Nelson Mandela, the flag was lowered to half mast at UN duty stations around the world. Deputy Secretary-General Jan Eliasson said that we should remember Mandela today, but carry his spirit with us everyday by "speaking out against prejudice and discrimination." UNICEF Executive Director Anthony Lake said that Mandela was "the father of his nation" and devoted much of his work to children.
