Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said he was "alarmed" by the widespread outbreak of violent protests and excessive use of force in Egypt. On the latest talks between Israel and the Palestinians he said "the negotiators and leaders will have to make tougher decisions and even more difficult choices. This is not a zero-sum game." (UNTV)

IRAQ / SYRIAN REFUGEES

The UN refugee agency said that over 20,000 Syrians have fled to the Kurdistan region of northern Iraq in the last four days. Many said they were fleeing fighting between armed groups and cited scarcity of food, water and electricity. (UNHCR)
