In northern Mali, July 1st marks the day when the troops of African Union deployed here will be absorbed into a 12,000 strong peacekeeping force of the UN Mission to Mali – MINUSMA. Anthony Banbury, the Assistant Secretary General of the UN for the Field Support and his team have visited regional capitals Gao and Timbuktu to see first hand what are the needs and challenges that troops are facing in this remote region.
