STORYLINE:

The United Nations (UN) Security Council today (6 March) observed a minute of silence honoring the memory of Venezuelan President Hugo Chaves who died yesterday (5 March) at the age of 58 after a long battle with cancer.

Also, in a statement issued by the Spokesperson's office last night (5 March), Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said that President Chávez "spoke to the challenges and aspirations of the most vulnerable Venezuelans. He provided decisive impetus for new regional integration movements, based on an eminently Latin American vision, while showing solidarity toward other nations in the hemisphere." 
In the statement, Ban also offered his condolences to the family of President Hugo Chávez, and the Government and the people of Venezuela. He also renewed the UN's commitment to work alongside the Government and its citizens in support of Venezuela's development and prosperity.
Chavez was President of Venezuela from 1999 until his death on 5 March 2013.

He was formerly the leader of the Fifth Republic Movement political party from its foundation in 1997 until 2007, when he became the leader of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV).

Chavez left behind four children, and three grandchildren.
