STORYLINE:

Valerie Amos, the United Nations (UN) Emergency Relief Coordinator is visiting Turkey to draw attention to the humanitarian impact of the conflict in Syria.

Today (13 March) she met with the Governor of Kilis, Süleyman Tapsız with whom she also held talks on the situation of the Syrian refugees in that area.

Following a tour to a daycare centre in the camp in Kilis with Governor Suleyman Tapsiz, Valerie Amos also meet refugee families living there and the Turkish and internal agencies helping them.

She also visited a Women Centre and toured its weaving section. She also toured the market in the camp where refugees are using e-cards to buy groceries from the market in side the camp. This system was introduced WFP in cooperation with Turkish Red Cresent. The Food e-Card programme started in five camps, one in Kilis and four in Hatay, initially for 25,000 Syrians, and will then be expanded to include a higher number of families, as cooking facilities and access to shops become available in other camps.

More than one million Syrians are now living as refugees, and the Turkish authorities estimate that they are hosting some 400,000 refugees.
