"The Syrian Government has requested a few minutes the Secretary-General of the United Nations to forma a specialized, independent and neutral technical mission to investigate the use by the terrorists groups operating in Syria of chemical weapons yesterday against civilians in the town of Khan al-Asal in Aleppo."

"The Syrian government as you may recall had sent an early notification about this kind of threats in an official letter to both the Secretary-General and the President of the Security Council on December the 8 2012 warning against the possibility of using chemical weapons and chemical materials by the terrorists groups in Syria within the Syrian territory and then trying to accuse the Syrian government of using these chemical materials in order to deviate the attention from the real facts on the ground which is that the Syrian Government, if it has such weapons, will never use it against its own population."

STORYLINE:

Syria's Ambassador Bashar Ja'afari announced today (20 March) that his government had requested the United Nations Secretary-General to form a technical mission in order to investigate the alleged use of chemical weapons in the Syrian territory yesterday.

Ja'afari was talking to reporters at the United Nations in New York and he said that the mission should be an "independent and neutral technical mission to investigate the use by the terrorists groups operating in Syria of chemical weapons yesterday against civilians in the town of Khan al-Asal in Aleppo."

He said that back in December 2012 his government had sent a letter to the Secretary-General and the President of the Security Council notifying them of the possible threat of the use of chemical weapons by "the terrorists groups in Syria within the Syrian territory and then trying to accuse the Syrian government of using these chemical materials."
