"The female police officers are doing very good job and I think is it very good of UN to support these women to this opportunity to have this English class. Even if it is basic level, they have to start somewhere and it feels so good in your heart when you feel that you are doing a good job even if it is a couple of hours every day."

STORYLINE

At a garage shed in a police station in Juba, South Sudan's capital, English lessons are taking place.

Seeking to boost basic English skills, the United Nations Mission in South Sudan is teaching the language to over 50 women from South Sudan National Police Service (SSNPS).

English is one of the official languages of South Sudan.

The four week long English class started in January 2013. But it is still taking place due to interruptions from the students' normal daily schedule.

The lessons have been organized and conducted by UN Police (UNPOL) and the participants will receive certificates of appreciation at the end.

Debora Ajak Guit, one of the English students, is a single mother of five boys.

She said the training's practical aspects were particularly useful, adding "I now understand some English and it will help me in my work."

Suna Reak, another English student, said that she had stopped her education at an early age, and therefore was grateful for the opportunity to learn English.

Berit Edlund-Bjorkman is one of the UNPOL trainers.

She believes the training is timely and that it will help the students in their future work..

UNPOL is mandated by Security Council Resolution 1996 (2011) to strengthen the capacity of SSNPS through advice on policy, planning, and legislative development, as well as training and mentoring in key policing areas.

As South Sudan celebrates international women's day with the national theme of educating girls and women, the hope is that the women within the South Sudan's police force will eventually speak one of their official languages.
