SOUTH SUDAN / PIBOR UNREST

STORYLINE

Following an exchange of fire which broke out between South Sudan's army, the Sudan People's Liberation army and an armed group on yesterday (6 March) in the market area of Pibor town in eastern Jonglei, hundreds of residents fled the town and market area temporarily.

The residents sought refuge at the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) compound but returned to their homes hours after.

SOUNDBITE (Murle) Elizabeth Gari, Pibor resident: 
"This is the safe place when the 'shooting' happened, we run to UNIMIS because it is a safe place and they protect us."

UNMISS will continue to do its utmost to support local authorities and the government of South Sudan to maintain peace in the area. The Mission will also conduct various patrols and protection of civilians within its capacity.

UNMISS has been patrolling and deploying troops in Jonglei State as part of its mandate to protect civilians.

After yesterday's exchange of fire the situation has remained calm and the civilians have returned to their homes.
