"We are here in the Domiz camp in northern Iraq where most of the people have fled from Qamishly and rural Qamishly in northern Syria.  We are actually functioning inside northern Syria as well, so we are supporting the families that these people have left behind inside Syria as well as the people who have sought refuge here in northern Iraq."

STORYLINE

15 March 2013 is the second anniversary of the start of the Syrian civil war.

Since then, many Syrians have taken refuge in northern Iraq, in the Domiz camp, where the World Food Program (WFP) started a voucher programme in November.

Matthew Hollingworth, WFP's Deputy Regional Emergency Coordinator, said that most of the people in the Domiz camp had fled from Qamishly and rural Qamishly in northern Syria.  He said WFP was also in Syria supporting the families that had been left behind.

WFP is currently providing 30,000 Syrians in Domiz camp with food vouchers worth US$31 per person, per month. Food vouchers can be redeemed against a list of items, including fresh produce, and because they are spent in local shops, they provide a boost for the local economy.  
 
Mariam, a mother and refugee from rural Qamishly, said that now she knew how Iraqi refugees must have felt when they fled and lost family members in the war and escaped to Syria as refugees.

She said: "Now I feel like they did."

And inside Syria, WFP has distributed over 83,000 metric tons of food to millions of Syrians in over 400 different locations across the country, using 5,000 trucks and 55 ships. Emergency operations started back in August 2011.
 
WFP delivers food to areas under opposition and government control.

On average, 40 to 45 percent of the areas that WFP has been reaching are controlled by the opposition.
 
In February, 1.7 million people inside Syria received WFP food boxes. The UN food agency is scaling up food assistance to reach 2.5 million in the country in coming months.
 
Meanwhile, as a result of funding shortages, WFP faces severe challenges in expanding its emergency operations to feed millions of people affected by the conflict. The UN food agency's plans to reach 2.5 million people inside Syria, and over a million refugees in neighboring countries, are threatened by the lack of resources. WFP needs US$156 million urgently to continue a life support line to Syrians from now until June.
