STORYLINE:	
										
Early January the United Nation Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo's (MONUSCO) engineering section in collaboration with air transport authorities launched a project to construct a stone security fence using around Goma's international airport. MONUSCO funded the project at a cost of US$380,000.

The budget included manpower of 50 men and MONUSCO also supplied construction materials such as cement and sand. Clearing and excavation is also carried out by MONUSCO with the help from the engineering section of the South African Army.

The Air Transport Authority (RVA) is contributing stones.

The construction work was not an easy task as the workers had to beat the stones into shape using hammers to erect the wall. Dust is another hazard that the masons and helpers had to endure while working on this project.

It took a full week to build just 10 meters in length and 4 meters in height.

MONUSCO took the initiative to assist RVA in securing the airport due to numerous people crossing the runway, posing great risks to themselves and to air passengers.

The population that lives around the airport passes through the airport crossing to and from both sides, including school children.

The L shaped perimeter wall will cover a distance of about 2.5 km and is estimated to be completed in 8 months. Plans are underway to secure the entire airport which is estimated at 8 km all around.

About 2 km of the runway at Goma international airport was destroyed by the lava in 2002 during a volcanic eruption from Nyiragongo Mountain which remains active.
