STORYLINE:

Holocaust survivor and renown writer Stephane Hessel, who was also a member of the French resistance in II World War died at the age of 95 in Paris last night (26 February).

Hessel who participated in the drafting of the Declaration of Human Rights 64 years ago said in an interview with the United Nations in Brussles back in December last year, on the occasion of Human Rights Day, that "there are still terrible violations" in the world today, citing the Israeli and Palestinian conflict as well as the situations in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Sudan as examples

Hessel was born in Berlin, Germany in 1917 and became a naturalized French citizen in 1939  before being mobilized later that year into the French army. After the Second World War, Hessel was involved together with Eleanor Roosevelt  in editing the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948.
