"I remember everything. Everything was way better. More beautiful. Everything was nicer. But then, the war was happening in front of us. It wasn't good anymore.  We ran out of everything. And the cold weather started. So we came here. With war happening on top of our heads. And here there are no bombings, no wars. It's over."

"How did you come here to Lebanon?"

"By escaping."

"We got into the car, we bent down, so that no one could see us, and we crossed."

"We arrived yesterday."

"You arrived just yesterday. Are you happy here?

"Yes"

"We arrived here by bus."

"Three days. Because there was snow. So it took more time. We were not able to cross directly. We had to wait a day or 2 to arrive in Lebanon."
-Interviewer:
"How did you feel on your way to Lebanon?"
-Oula:
"I was scared. That's it."

"We were having breakfast and the house was about to fall on us. So we went all outside. The glass was broken and fell...The glass was shaken then it broke. And we went out to see what the bomb destroyed. It had destroyed the home of our friend. But he didn't die and no one was hurt. I was very much afraid for him. If he died, I will have no one to play with.

"In general, the children are quiet now. Since we came here, there is safety now. But when they hear the sound of a plane or of a car that is a bit too noisy they are scared. But now, little by little, they begin to adapt and to feel more secure. Here we are safe. Except Adnan who is constantly afraid. Especially at night, as soon as the sun is gone, he starts crying."

"When your home was burning, you took all your belongings and left?

We left but he stayed. We did not manage to take him out in time. He did not stay that long in the fire. Not more than 2 minutes. But the fire was very harsh on him."

"In Syria, we were living under the bombings. Our home was even hit by a bullet. So we came here where we are safe. And we play outside."

STORYLINE:

Thousands of Syrians have fled their homes to escape the conflict in their country.
Today more than 200.000 refugees are officially sheltering in Lebanon. More arrive every day.

In neighbouring countries the refugee numbers have continued to grow this week and 728,553 Syrians are now either registered as refugees or awaiting registration.

According to the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR)  estimates in Lebanon there are presently 237,623 Syrian refugees; in Jordan the number has reached 227,484; 163,161 in Turkey; 79,769 in Iraq; 14,478 in Egypt and 6,338 in North Africa.

In Lebanon the refugees face a bitter winter in home-made shelters. There is nothing for them there but the kindness of strangers and their own determination.

Children are the first victims of conflict and displacement's experience With the onset winter and the lack of basic food and clothing their life is a challenge day by day.

At the Sheikh Ayash Akkar cam in north Lebanon refugee children share the memories of their ordeal.
