HAITI / RECYCLING

A UN Volunteer from Nigeria brought the idea of recycling bottles into useful and beautiful objects from his previous job with the UN peacekeeping mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo. He set up a project through which young people are now transforming between four and five thousand bottles each week. MINUSTAH

"With the support of Souley, his advice and also his financial aid that allows us to buy the material we are using, the association is doing very well. We participate in competitions in Port-au-Prince, and we are also going to Verrettes CITY to do theater play. We are representing in these workshops all we do: with my friend we started creating bags made out of peanut bag paper. With the support of Souley, we did so much more and we can make this workshop really work."

"That was the first idea: to set up a certain number of mechanisms that will meet the objectives of Rio +20 and at the same time create a green economy. Imagine you CAN rescue the environment by collecting all these bottles instead of burning them or throwing them and polluting the environment. You recycle them for a small income. That is Green Economy!"

"Given the economic situation of the young people here, AJVDC developed a plan for a program which gives people with any kind of talent the possibility to improve their living conditions. Starting from Literature through arts crafts work up to painting; what the association is doing is having as many young people as possible, train them so that they will be able to manufacture and then sell their products."

STORYLINE:

When Nigerian Souley Garba arrived to Haiti in 29010 he got a job with the United Nations mission (MINUSTAH) in the town of Hinche as a volunteer for the Electoral unit there, shortly after he met the young members of the Association of young volunteers for the development of Haiti's centre (AJVDC) and he immediately engaged with them

Garba held his first Volunteer job back in 2007 as a specialist in electoral matters in Madagascar and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), before joining the UN mission in Haiti. Through his prior working experience he was able not only to help the young people from AJVDC organize themselves, but he also accomplished his personal objective to help people in Haiti.

"The main goal is to have an emerging youth. When I arrived here, I had fixed myself the idea to have a group of young people that can develop their neighborhood and with God's will I found one day these young people of a group called AJVDC ".

Souley brought to the young members of AJVDC an idea from his previous job in the DRC. The idea involved recycle bottles into different objects. So the youth at AJVDC began to transforming between four to five thousand bottles each week in their ateliers at Hinche and Marmond towns.

So Souley installed several assembly points around the towns where young people could bring their bottles each week. He paid 2 Haitian Gourdes (5 US cents) for 3 bottles, and made a total of 2.500 Gourdes (60 US dollars) per month.

"With Souley's support, his advice and also his financial aid we've been able to buy the materials we are using, and the Association is doing very well. We participate in competitions in Port-au-Prince, and we are also going to Verrettes to do theater plays. And in these workshops we show case all we are doing. With a friend we started creating bags made out of peanut bag paper. With Souley's support we do so much more and we made this workshop really work."

Souley started his micro environmental project last September with 1, 500 US dollars out of his own pocket, and the youngsters at AJVDC found a way to sell their recycled bottles.

Meanwhile AJVDC grew from only 20 members, to its present 300 members.

Souley also joins young people at their home where they perform different kind of activities like artist Peralte Pierre, another member of AJVDC who today teaches painting to 25 young artists.

For Souley AJVDC program has been a motor to to improve the living conditions of the young population in Hinche.

Souley's commitment not only changed the economic situation of the young population in Hinche for the better but also has helped them in their personal growth.
