"The Holocaust was a turning point in the history of mankind. This was the defining moment when humanity collectively agreed that such a crime should never be allowed to happen again. It is fitting that a General Assembly resolution which established this international day calls not only for remembrance of the untold suffering of the Holocaust victims but also remind us that we have a moral obligation to warn against the horrors of  hatred and prejudice to prevent future acts of future acts of genocide."

"Every year from this same podium the Iranian President denies the Holocaust while threatening to carry out another one. Every day Hamas teachers teach anti-Semitism to the next generation of children in Gaza telling them that the holocaust is, 'a lie made up by Zionists'. Similar messages echo across the Arab world. Our duty has never, never been clearer. The hands of time threaten to cloud the world's memory, it is our responsibility to rescue the history and the lessons of the Holocaust just as the men and women that we honour today rescued its victims. It is our responsibility to teach the values of tolerance, to educate our children so that they live together as one human family."

STORYLINE:

Following a minute of silence observed during a ceremony today at the UN in New York, marking the International Day of Commemoration in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust, Congolese Ambassador Bale told guests that said it was fitting that the Assembly resolution that established the commemoration called not only for the remembrance of the suffering of the Holocaust victims, but also evoked a moral obligation to warn against the horrors of hatred and prejudice, to prevent further acts of genocide.

This year's observance of the International Day was built around the theme "Rescue during the Holocaust: The Courage to Care," profiling individual rescuers – who not only defied the Nazis, but often also multiple governments.

Israeli Ambassador Ron Prosor said that today on behalf of the 6 million (Holocaust victims) "we say loudly and clearly 'nothing, nothing can break the 5 thousand year old chain of Jewish history'".

Posner said that every year from the same GA podium he was talking from, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, "denies the Holocaust while threatening to carry out another one", and that "everyday" Hamas teachers taught children in Gaza "that the Holocaust is, 'a lie made up by Zionists'". Prosor said that as time threatened to cloud the world's memory, "it is our responsibility to rescue the history and the lessons of the Holocaust just as the men and women that we honour today rescued its victims".

The annual International Day was designated by a General Assembly resolution as 27 January each year, on the anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz death camp.
