STORYLINE

A spokesman for the UN Secretary-General today (24 January) said today the response by the Democratic People Republic of Korea (DPRK) to this week's Security Council resolution was "not conducive" to resolving differences on the peninsula.

North Korea Thursday threatened to conduct a nuclear test and said its missile and nuclear programs would "target" the United States, according to press reports. The statement from the North Korean National Defence Commission comes a day after the UN Security Council tightened sanctions on the DPRK while reiterating its condemnation of its December 2012 missile launch.

UN spokesman Eduardo del Buey told reporters that yesterday's resolution "was passed reflecting international concern about what is happening in North Korea. Obviously the response by the DPRK is something that is not conducive towards a favourable resolution of the differences on the Korean Peninsula. However it will be up to the member states of the Security Council to see how they respond to the DPRK's response."

Asked specifically about Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon's opinion of the North Korean response, del Buey referred to a statement issued Wednesday. He said Ban "called for there to be no provocative actions. He called for there to be dialogue, to denuclearize the Korean Peninsula. That remains his position."
 
In the statement, Secretary-General called upon the DPKR to "refrain from taking any measures that can exacerbate tensions on the peninsula, including any further launches that use ballistic missile technology or a nuclear test."
