STORYLINE:

The Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince is bustling with activity. It's a city on the move.

Like Marie Suze Dornette. She's lived in a displacement camp with her two children since a devastating earthquake struck the island nation two years ago.

SOUNDBITE (Creole) Marie Suzette Dornette, Displaced Person:
"It was very difficult; there was no life in these tents. We were surviving, but just barely."

Today, her tent is coming down. She and her family are getting a subsidy, so they can leave the camp and rent a home.

She's not alone.

An estimated one and a half million people were displaced by the earthquake. The city centre of Port-au-Prince looked like this in the aftermath. Now, most of the tents are gone.

All but 360 thousand people have left the camps for good.

With $100 million dollars in financing and support from the World Bank's International Development Association (IDA) and the Haiti Reconstruction Fund, the Government is providing rental grants, repairing houses, and upgrading neighbourhoods.

In this IDA program in the Port-Au-Prince neighbourhood of Delmas identical houses ease the shortage caused not just by the earth quake. They also will accommodate Haiti's growing population.

For housing recipients like Junior Cavillare they represent a safe haven in a sometimes chaotic country.

As the displaced are housed, programs also concentrate on helping the government provide a stable, healthy environment for all Haitians.
 
Take this ravine, filled with trash in a crowded neighbourhood and in danger of flooding.

A World Bank program is paying the people to clean up the ravine and build bridges, part of an   infrastructure improvement plan benefiting over 200,000 people in the capital's poorer areas.

For residents it's a double benefit; a safer neighbourhood and a paying job. Then, there's education. IDA programs help finance school fees for 100,000 children and provide hot meals to 70,000 students every day.

Another program is outside of Port of Prince, in an area hit hard by a cholera epidemic that followed the earthquake.

Here, patients can get specialized treatment for cholera at a new medical centre. A World Bank program started in 2010 has reached 1 million people with prevention, education, and treatment.

Cholera rates are decreasing. And the Haitian government is building its capacity to monitor and contain future outbreaks.

Another future focused program is underway in the suburb of Tabarre, where volunteers practice emergency response drills.

It makes sense, Haiti has one of the highest exposures to natural disasters in the world.

The World Bank supports improving civil protection resources, so the people of Haiti are better prepared when disaster strikes again – another Earthquake or hurricanes such as Sandy.

All these programs have a few things in common; World Bank support under government leadership, the building of institutions and capacity, and an emphasis on future growth, not just past disaster.
