STORYLINE:

The head of the United Nations organization dedicated to gender equality and the empowerment of women spoke at a ministerial meeting of Islamic countries today (4 December) to underscore the central role that women play in advancing development in all societies.

Michelle Bachelet, Executive Director of UN Women, said "investing in women is not only the right thing to do but smart thing to do."

The meeting of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) was hosted by Indonesia, the largest Muslim-majority country in the world.

The recent increase in local by-laws based on religious law, or sharia, has some women's activists in Indonesia worried.  
  
Wahida Rustam, a women's rights activist cited an example in South Sulawesi province where "there is a local law that allows caning, and most of the victims of this law are women."

Asked if these local by-laws are compatible with international conventions, Bachelet said "it's time to revisit, to review those bylaws and adapt it in a way that they can really be coherent and consistent with commitments that Indonesia has made."

As part of her first-ever visit to Indonesia as chief of the UN Women, Bachelet also met with Indonesia's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Marty Natalegawa.

Bachelet said "Indonesia could be a very good role model".

She added that "the best for men and women is that women live in a world free of violence." 
 
Bachelet's visit to Indonesia coincided with the global '16 Days' campaign to end violence against women, which runs from the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women (25 November) to Human Rights Day (10 December).
