HAITI / EXTREME POVERTY

The Head of the World Bank Jim Yong Kim and President of Haiti Joseph Martelly launched the first colloquium on fighting extreme poverty in Haiti this week. The objective is to bring the level of poverty, currently at 51.1 percent, to 40 percent in 2016. MINUSTAH

STORYLINE:

The first colloquium on extreme poverty is taking place in Haiti, around the theme "Think and fight against extreme poverty".
 
SOUNDBITE (French) Michel Martelly, President of Haiti:
"This fight against injustice and violence created by extreme poverty, I commit to lead it to the limit of my capacity using all possible resources of our land."
 
Among other experts, President of the World Bank attended the three-day gathering intended to create a solid strategy to give hope to Haiti's crippled economy.
 
SOUNDBITE (English) Jim Yong Kim, President of the World Bank:
"Haiti's economy cannot be built by and benefit just the privileged of few. It must been built by and benefit all Haitians."

The objective is to bring the level of poverty, currently at 51.1 percent, to 40 percent in 2016.
 
The idea of the colloquium is to mobilize the citizens concerned by the different areas of the economy in the heart of the actions and programs against poverty and present social programs already launched by the new government.

Earlier this year the minister in charge of the fight against extreme poverty toured the poorest areas to present social aid programmes in the field of food aid to vulnerable families or education.

According to the World Bank more than 60 percent of the Haitian population are unemployed or underemployed.
