"While attaching great importance to the full, effective, balanced, simultaneous, non-selective and non-discriminatory implementation of all provisions of the NPT, we strongly stress that exercising all inalienable right to nuclear science, energy and technology for peaceful purposes, which is also inherent part of the sovereignty of State Parties, can never be suspended or restricted by any organ, under any circumstances or pretext whatsoever."

"It is a source of grave concern that those who have chosen not to accede to the NPT, not only are not subject to any pressure to do so, but are also encouraged and generously rewarded in many ways. A living example is the well documented assistance and cooperation provided by certain Western countries, in particular the United States and the two nuclear weapon states members of the European Union, the United Kingdom and France, to the Israeli regime."

STORYLINE:

Iranian Ambassador Mohammad Khazaee told the General Assembly today (5 November) that while his country attaches "great importance" to all provisions of the Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty (NPT), the right to nuclear science, energy and technology for peaceful purposes "can never be suspended or restricted by any organ, under any circumstances or pretext whatsoever."

Khazaee stressed that this right is a central part of the treaty, to which Iran is a State Party.

The Ambassador expressed "grave concern" that other States that are not party to the NPT, "not only are not subject to any pressure to do so, but are also encouraged and generously rewarded in many ways."

As an example, he cited the "well documented assistance and cooperation" provided by the United States, the United Kingdom and France to Israel.

The General Assembly was meeting to discuss a report on the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) activities over the past year.

The Agency's report addresses the agency's continued safeguards activities with regard to the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), Iran and Syria and notes that the IAEA has "credible information" indicating that Iran had carried out "activities relevant to the development of a nuclear explosive device."

Ambassador Ri Tong Il of the DPRK told the meeting that "the IAEA has no justification and no power to intervene on the nuclear issue of the Korean peninsula" as the DPRK "is not State Party to the NPT nor is it a member of the IAEA."

Ri told the General Assembly that the DPRK was under threat from the United States, "the largest Nuclear Weapon State" and therefore "had no option but to go nuclear to defend itself, to safeguard the security and sovereignty and to safeguard the right to existence of the entire Korean nation."
