UN / TREATIES

On the sidelines of the busy opening of the General Assembly session at United Nations Headquarters, close to 40 States took more than 80 treaty actions in an annual event that ended today (2 October), signing or becoming party to one or several of the 550 multilateral treaties deposited with the UN Secretary-General.

STORYLINE:

The annual Treaty Event is an opportunity for Member States to sign or ratify global treaties focusing on issues ranging from human rights to disarmament, international crime, the environment, communications and world trade.

This year's event featured four Heads of State, two Heads of Government, thirty Ministers, and four Ambassadors to the United Nations.

Among them was Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan, who submitted Nigeria's accession to the Convention for the Suppression of Acts of Nuclear Terrorism, also ratified by Malta and Turkey, and the Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Rights of the Child on the Involvement of Children in Armed Conflict, which was also ratified by Indonesia and Swaziland.

Indonesia's Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa ratified two Optional Protocols to the Convention on the Rights of the Child, one on the Involvement of Children in Armed Conflict, and one on the Sale of Children, Child Prostitution and Child Pornography, also ratified by Swaziland, and signed by Russia.

And Poland's Under Secretary of State Maciej Szpunar ratified the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, which was also ratified by Israel, Russia, Swaziland and the tiny island nation Dominica.
