STORYLINE:

Recognizing the urgent need for medical transport in the South Sudanese state of Unity, Mongolian engineers from the UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) have been repairing out-of-service ambulances at Bentiu Hospital.
 
The ambulances, which broke down two years ago, had been grounded at Unity State's only referral hospital.

"Now we have two ambulances and they are functioning and will help us and help our community. It is like humanitarian support and we appreciate this by the Mongolian UNMISS team".

Bentiu Hospital Director Dr. Simon John Deng said the gesture was life-saving.

The State Medical Director of Bentiu Hospital said they had four Ambulances before and three were not functioning. He said at the level of the hospital administration they appreciated the effort of Mongolian UNMISS in carrying out their duties to deliver services to the people. Two ambulances are now back on road and the third undergoing repairs.

Once the floods have receded and roads became passable again, the repaired ambulances will be able to assist in transporting patients to hospital from different parts of the state, including IDP camps, according to UNMISS.

The health situation in Bentiu and surrounding areas has been reported to be alarming in recent months, as heavy floods affected host communities and thousands of refugees arrived after fleeing fighting in Sudan's Southern Kordofan State.
