STORYLINE:

At the opening of a memorial to American President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today (18 October) said no single person had been more instrumental in the founding of the United Nations.

Forty years in the making, the Four Freedoms Park on Roosevelt Island features an oversized bust of the former US President.

The sculpture sits at the park's tip, practically a swim away from United Nations Headquarters.

An ever-present reminder of just how closely the UN and Roosevelt's legacy are linked, according to Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, who laid a wreath at the park during the opening ceremony.

The Secretary-General said Roosevelt "had the vision; he helped develop the plans; he even gave us our name."

President Roosevelt's granddaughter, Anna Roosevelt, wants visitors to the park to remember her grandfather's legacy. She said "if he were here today, he would see how important these visual cues are to help us remember what we need to aspire to. What we can all do, every day, whether on a small stage or a large stage."

Four Freedoms park gets its name from Roosevelt's famous 1941 speech in which he declared that freedom from fear and want, as well as freedom of speech and worship were fundamental to a better world.
