HAITI / HURRICANE SANDY

As Hurricane Sandy makes its way through the Caribbean's, Haiti woke up under heavy floods today. Hundreds of families have been evacuated and bridges collapsed in several cities in the south and three people have been reported dead. (MINUSTAH)

STORYLINE:

As Hurricane Sandy makes its way through the Caribbean's, Haiti woke up under heavy floods today (25 October.)

In Fourgy, North of Port-au-Prince, many houses were under water.

Yves is a father of four whose family has lost everything in one night.

SOUNDBITE (Creole) Yves Fernand, Resident of Fourgy:
"We lost everything, everything. Water wouldn't stop pouring. It's been raining all night and at midnight everything got flooded. Everybody lost everything in the houses."

People complain that authorities have failed to take preventive measures in this flood prone area.

SOUNDBITE (Creole) Casimir Pierre Marie, Resident of Fourgy:

The Haitian Government activated a red alert system last night, meaning all emergency services are on standby.

Hurricane Sandy was rated a Category 1 hurricane on the Saffir Simpson scale and is already moving away from the region, but its tail has brought heavy rains to the country.
