"We all know that MINUSTAH should reduce effective in 2013. But this doesn't prevent the UN police to accompany the blue helmets in assisting the HNP in their patrols. We will continue to assist during the police operations to increase the security of the population and especially the feeling of security because some people have been concerned about it in these areas."

"The objective was not to search for suspects or specific suspects. At the contrary other measures will be undertaken by the PNH [Haitian National Police] to try to stop the increase of violence in these areas."

STORYLINE:

The United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH) today (22 October) conducted a joint security operation with the Haitian National Police (HNP) in two troubled areas of the country's capital Port au Prince, due to an increase in the number of criminal incidents in the last month.

SOUNDBITE (French) Miguel Alston, Spokesperson UN Police/MINUSTAH:
"We all know that MINUSTAH should reduce effective in 2013. But this doesn't prevent the UN police to accompany the blue helmets in assisting the HNP in their patrols. We will continue to assist during the police operations to increase the security of the population and especially the feeling of security because some people have been concerned about it in these areas."

One hundred blue helmets, fifty UN Police officers and MINUSTAH's Formed Police Unit (FPU) as well as one hundred HNP officers participated in the operation which took place from 7 to 10 a.m.

MINUSTAH and the HNP were showing their presence in these notorious areas through checkpoints and foot patrols.

But during the operation HNP did arrest some suspected gang members.
