Millions of Haitian children are heading to the classroom this school year and UNICEF is supporting the Haitian government to provide children a free and quality education, in particular vulnerable children and those in difficult-to-access areas. UNICEF

STORYLINE:

Six-year-old Gloria Lincee is attending school for the first time this year.

She lives in the mountains outside of Port-au-Prince, in a small house she shares with her parents and three sisters.

Just down the hill, she'll be joining about 200 other primary-age children in her neighborhood, and a brand-new school built by UNICEF, with the support of the community.

Gloria is one of millions of Haitian children heading to the classroom this school year. And once again, UNICEF is supporting the Haitian government to provide more children a free and quality education, in particular vulnerable children and those in difficult-to-access areas.

UNICEF has been preparing 750,000 school kits for girls like Gloria. Each kit contains notebooks, pens, pencils, erasers and chalk. And teachers are receiving books, notebooks and other classroom supplies.

For Gloria, writing her name in her notebooks for the first time is an exciting first step in her education. One of the many reasons she's happy at her new school.

On the inaugural day of her new school, UNICEF's country representative was joined by top education officials from the Haitian government. The UNICEF approach to supporting the government focuses on equity, and reaching the greatest number of students across the country.

Gloria's teacher, Mireille Gazeau, says this support is exactly what is needed for the children of Haiti.

"What I dream for girls like Gloria, is that they do something in their life. That they complete something. That they finish school. That they will be able to do what they like to do, meaning, being a doctor, an engineer. Who knows? Even a president."

Nobody can predict how far Gloria's education will carry her. But for now she has the proper tools for learning, as well as a safe and comfortable school.
