UN / SOMALIA MINI SUMMIT

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today (26 September) praised Somalia for the progress in its democratic transition and called on the international community to continue supporting the East African nation, stressing that "there is no time to lose" as the country is still facing serious humanitarian and security challenges.

"Today we begin a new partnership for peacebuilding in Somalia, one that is led by Somalis and grounded in shared principles to build peace and prosperity opportunities for the long term. There is no time to lose. There are still many elements in Somalia trying to block progress and undermine peace."

STORYLINE:

Ban said in his remarks at a "mini-summit" on Somalia, held in New York on the margins of the high-level debate of the 67th General Assembly,  "today we begin a new partnership for peacebuilding in Somalia, one that is led by Somalis and grounded in shared principles to build peace and prosperity opportunities for the long term."

The Secretary-General nevertheless warned that "there are still many elements in Somalia trying to block progress and undermine peace."

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton told the meeting that "transparency and accountability must be required" from the new Government and urged it to appoint a cabinet "of people who will work to promote the interests of the Somali people and respond to their needs and maintain the confidence of international donors, so future collaboration can continue."

Addressing the meeting via teleconference from Mogadishu, the new Somali President, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, said "Somalia has retained its distinguished position in the world community and has assumed its responsibilities both in the national and international levels, thus earning the support and the esteem of the entire human family."

He proclaimed that his administration "will be characterized by a new approach."

After decades of warfare, Somalia has been undergoing a peace and national reconciliation process, with a series of landmark steps over recent weeks helping bring an end to the country's eight-year political transition period. These steps included the adoption of a provisional constitution, the establishment of a new parliament and the selection of a new president.
