"Laws that breed discrimination among people and nations receive neither recognition nor legitimacy. Law must be implemented with equal rights and obligations for all. Discriminatory privilege of the veto right enjoyed by some members of the Security Council lacks legitimacy and that is why the Security Council has failed to establish justice and ensure sustainable peace and security in the world We have witnessed that some members of the Security Council with veto right have chosen silence with regard to the nuclear warheads of a fake regime while at the same time they impede scientific progress of their nations."

"Ghana is reaping the dividends of Democracy and rule of law. The stable atmosphere created as a result of constitutional governance since 1992 has seen a remarkable increase in economic growth. Last year Ghana's economy grew at some 14 percent, one of the highest in the world, per capita income of Ghanaians has grown from 400 dollars in 1992 to 1,300 dollars today, pushing Ghana into lower middle income status."

"We see principles such as universal jurisdiction being used many times selectively and in one direction, as a political tool in the arena of International Affairs for the principles of control and domination. Rwanda has first hand experience with how important the rule is and most specifically the implementation of its substance or disregard and unequal application. That absence destroyed our country in the [post independence decades leading up to the genocide of 1994 followed by an unjust treatment in the name of universal jurisdiction."

STORYLINE:

Iran's President told delegates during a summit on the Rule Law today (24 September) at the United Nations that "laws that breed discrimination among people and nations receive neither recognition nor legitimacy".

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said that the "discriminatory privilege" of the veto right held by some members of the Security Council lacked legitimacy and "that is why the Security Council has failed to establish justice and ensure sustainable peace and security in the world."

Kenya's president Emilio Mwai Kibaki, claimed Kenya had progressively promoted the rule of law and respect for democratic constitutionality said the rule of law has "not only further secured our democracy, but it has also allowed my country to promote entrepreneurship, free trade, and the fight against poverty".

Liberia's President said working with the United Nations and the international community made significant progress in re-establishing the rule of law in Liberia after 14 years of conflict. She said that the re-establishment of the rule of law, "was an important pillar of our Poverty Reduction Strategy, and today it is an integral part of our Agenda for Transformation".

Ghana's President John Dramani Mahama said, "Ghana is reaping the dividends of Democracy and rule of law".

He said that last year Ghana's economy had grown at "some 14 percent, one of the highest in the world."

Rwanda's leader, Paul Kagame said that he saw principles such as universal jurisdiction being used "many times selectively and in one direction" as a political tool in the arena of international affairs for the "principles of control and domination". He said that his country had firsthand experience with how important the rule was, adding that, the absence of it "destroyed our country in the post independence decades leading up to the genocide of 1994 followed by an unjust treatment in the name of universal jurisdiction."
