UGANDA / FOOTBALL

Football players from across East and Central Africa will gather in the Ugandan capital of Kampala on September 21 and 22 to take part in the finals of the Great Lakes Peace Cup, a tournament organized to help former combatants – many of them abducted child soldiers – become part of their communities through the unifying power of sport. STORYLINE:

Throughout the spring and summer of 2012, teams across Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda and Uganda played for national Peace Cup titles.

The winning teams from the four countries will meet and compete on the weekend of International Peace Day (September 21) to win the title of Great Lakes Peace Cup champion.

Ugandan Minister of Water and the Environment, Betty Bigombe, said playing football is "something that they enjoy doing rather than sitting in a classroom being told to reconcile" and these former combatants  "are probably going to socialize more and more and talk about the game they have had."

The Great Lakes Peace Cup aims to break down barriers and prejudice left by years of conflict. Each team consists roughly of half former combatants and half community members.

Louis Emmanuel Oloyotoo Okello, a player for Kampala's Winterbury FC, said he does his tem mates as football players, not as ex-soldiers "because that relationship has been built."

The Peace Cup is supported by the Transitional Demobilization and Reintegration Program (TDRP) of the World Bank.
