STORYLINE:

Both men noted positive changes taking place on the streets of Mogadishu, with people going about their business, new buildings being constructed, and bullet holes patched – even if many people are still displaced and living in tough conditions.

In Mogadishu, Banbury and Kamara were given the opportunity to meet with Somalia's newly elected president, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud.

They came away impressed with the new president's credentials and hopeful about Somalia's future under his government

Somalia has taken a series of landmark steps in recent weeks to bring an end to the Horn of Africa nation's eight-year political transition, including the adoption of a provisional constitution, the establishment of a new parliament and the election of Hassan Sheikh Mohamud as President last week.

This week, the Security Council expressed its determination to work closely with the new institutions and offices of the Somali authorities, and encouraged the new President to appoint an inclusive, accountable government.
